We refreshed the book for the latest Databricks Free Edition

A calm pass through every chapter, updated for serverless Free Edition

Every few months, the tools we teach with change. Databricks keeps improving its Free Edition, and a good book should keep pace without losing its calm.

So we went back through the whole book. We read each chapter again, checked the code, and made sure the ideas still match how Databricks Free Edition works today.

What we checked

We looked at three things in every chapter.

First, correctness. We reran the examples and fixed anything that had drifted. Small errors add up, and we would rather catch them than let you trip over them.

Second, clarity. We tidied the writing so each idea sits in its own short paragraph. The goal is always the same. You should understand why before you worry about how.

Third, Free Edition accuracy. This is the part that changes most often, so it deserved the most care.

Free Edition runs on serverless

The biggest update is a simple one. Databricks Free Edition runs on serverless compute.

You do not create a cluster. You do not pick a runtime version or size a machine. You attach a notebook to serverless compute and start working. The libraries you need are already there.

We updated the chapters that still talked about creating clusters, including the machine learning chapter, so the steps match what you actually see today. Where a feature only exists on a paid workspace, we say so clearly and explain the concept so you still understand it.

Newer chapters worth revisiting

While reviewing, we also want to point you to the newer chapters that round out the book.

No-Code Data Prep shows how to clean and shape data visually, then read the logic it generates.

Ingestion and ETL Pipelines walks through building Lakeflow Declarative Pipelines from bronze to gold, in both SQL and Python.

Databricks Apps explains how to build a small, governed web tool that reads live data next to where it lives.

Genie Spaces covers asking questions of your data in plain language, and introduces the wider Genie family.

AI Gateway, Serving and Lakebase brings serving, AI governance, and Postgres beside your lakehouse into one clear picture.

Nothing to do on your side

You do not need to reset anything. The updates are live across the book, and the first three chapters remain free to read.

If you own the book, open any chapter and keep going. The ideas are the same. They are just a little cleaner, and a little more true to the Databricks you use today.
